Drugs That Make You Relax

Depressants are a category of drug that reduce activity in the central nervous system, which is responsible for all significant brain activity. Drugs in this category include barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and alcohol. Marijuana has some depressant effects, but it also has other effects; therefore, it is typically classified as cannabis. These drugs are commonly used to reduce anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, or to increase relaxation. While many depressants are not often thought of as the most dangerous drug, there is still a high potential for misuse. The following chapters highlight these substances and their effects on the body, brain, and child development.
