Leading Causes of Death

This section deals with health outcomes that are also leading causes of death in the United States. The chapters in this section reveal how and why these causes of death affect men and their increased risk of experiencing the diseases.

The first chapter in this section, Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) deals with the leading cause of death for men in the United States. This chapter examines how race and socioeconomic status specifically contribute to the risk of men developing CVD.

Lung Cancer discusses the risk factors associated with the form of cancer responsible for the most deaths in the United States. While men are more likely to smoke than women, this chapter examines other such factors like race and age that affect the risk of males developing lung cancer.

Colorectal Cancer examines the risks and possible interventions associated with the third most common cause of cancer in men. Men have a slightly higher likelihood than women to develop the disease. That being said, the chapter discusses why men of different age and racial categories have disproportionate likelihoods of developing the disease.

Suicide studies the leading cause of death in the United States. The rate of suicide has been gradually increasing over the past two decades for the entire population, but this disease affects males more so than it does females. This chapter sheds light on this disparity by examining how race and age can lead to this statistical gap.

Type 2 Diabetes presents one of the most common chronic diseases in the United States. Type 2 diabetes is linked to behavior factors, and it has been found that men have nearly two times the risk of developing diabetes as women. This chapter studies how socioeconomic status and relationship status affect the behavioral factors associated with development of diabetes.
